Plan a Sustainable Rural Holiday
Travel and Tourism students from New College Stamford were given an assessed assignment to plan a sustainable rural holiday based around a tour of traditional rural carnivals. The brief was based on a real visit by the UK partners of the VESURT project who visited Galicia in Spain and northern Portugal as one of the project meetings. A powerpoint presentation introducing the assignment was shown to the students. |

Sara Candela, a Director of a local ecotourism company called Two Birds One Stone Ecotourism - www.twobirdsonestone.es, introduced the area and the theme. She also described how she could use the assignments to develop a tour of the same area with the same theme in February next year. She had already done some background research on entroido (traditional rural carnivals) in Galicia, Asturias regions of north-west Spain and the Duoro region of northern Portugal.

One example of a student assignment showing the journey, the accommodation and meals, and the entroido events, as well as the evidence for a sustainable rural holiday tour. For students wishing to work in a travel agency this is excellent work-related evidence.

The students presented and discussed their assignment with 10 educators from different EU countries who were on an EU Transversal Study visit - Education for Sustainable Communities. They also worked in mixed teams to explore the People, Profit and Planet Impacts of tourism - both positive and negative.
