SustEd developed an approach to enabling local rural tourism operators to focus on the local distinctiveness and sustianability of their operations. A workshop with local enterprises was used to introduce some elements and questions about local distinctiveness and cultural identity. This fits very well with the localism and regional identity programmes of the EU and its member countries.

A set of questions was developed to ask tourism operators about the sustainability of their operations. They covered Feeding, Building, Trading, Enriching, Welcoming, Celebrating, Travelling and Interpreting.

Tour operators are increasingly keen to identify and focus on what makes a particular destination or visitor attraction particularly characteristic of that locality. VET students and travel and tour operators need the skill and experience to do this in describing destinations to customers.
